    Things to Do

History is a primary part of the Clarksville experience. Several historically significant buildings exist here, including The Castle, built in 1869. Formerly the Texas Military Institute, this unique Victorian Gothic building is considered the oldest existing college building in Texas. It is a designated Austin landmark.

Originally built by a formerly enslaved man just after the Civil War, the 1879 Haskell House stands as a reminder of Clarksville’s historical roots. Across generations, the home has served as a place of worship and the site of a popular lunch program for seniors. In 1976, the house was deeded to the City and became a symbol of the Freedom Colony’s early history.

The 39-acre Castle Hill Historic District contains 175 properties and 16 city landmarks, including Fire House #4 and a "Moonlight Tower" at the corner of West 12th and Blanco Streets. Primarily residential, this district is the location of many architecturally significant homes.

The popular Mary Baylor Clarksville Pocket Park includes a splash pad, a shaded play area with two sets of swings, and a great spot to picnic under the trees. Additional amenities include basketball courts and a multipurpose field.
